Federico Grandi began studying the violin in 1986 under the guidance of
William Bignami, concertmaster of the Municipal Theater of Bologna Orchestra
and son of the famous luthier Otello Bignami, who he met and whose workshop he visited.
In 1999, supervised by Giovanni Adamo, he received
his conservatory diploma in violin and gradually started a business that would result
in collaborations with various Italian orchestras, including the Municipal Theater of Bologna Orchestra.
His particular interest in lutherie undoubtedly sprang from being in constant contact with numerous bowed string instruments and led him to become a long-time pupil of Pietro Trimboli, a prominent figure in Bolognese violin making and a direct descendant of Otello Bignami.
In 2008, he graduated from the University of Bologna with a degree in the conservation of cultural heritage, presenting a thesis on lutherie and receiving full marks with honors.
Over the years, he has taken part as an exhibitor in various international trade fairs, including Musikmesse Frankfurt, Music China, and Mondomusica.
Possessing the characteristic features of modern Bolognese lutherie, his instruments are the result of continuous research that has also produced a very personal style. They are esteemed in Italy and in various countries around the world, including Japan, China, South Korea, and the USA.
